LASG MEETS STAKEHOLDERS IN SOLID MINERALS SUBSECTOR

… Seeks Standardised Sand Mining Procedure 
 
The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has met with relevant stakeholders in the solid minerals subsector across the State to seek consensus on an acceptable sand mining procedure that is in sync with the 21st-century vision of the State Government.


Addressing the gathering at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium Alausa, Ikeja, the Honourable Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Olalere Odusote, said that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu wants the State Government and the stakeholders to agree on all relevant policies and laws relating to sand mining in order to improve business activities and promote healthy living within the various mining communities


Engr. Odusote emphasised the need for sand miners, traditional rulers and other relevant stakeholders to manage the land assets of the State Government in line with relevant laws. 

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ms. Sholabomi Shasore pointed out the need for Lagos State Government to complement the efforts of the Federal Government, which controls the mining sector, in order to ensure proper coordination of drilling activities in accordance with the law. 

Her words: “The State Government has plans for the sector. But despite this, we have realised that we must work with all our stakeholders to achieve our plans for the mining sector. I plead with you to be ready to support the government just as the government is determined to collaborate with you as well”.


She acknowledged the critical roles of traditional rulers, security operatives, tipper associations and garages, as well as sand miners, among others, in ensuring that the environment is protected from degradation and lack of coordination.


The Chairman of Mining Forum, Lagos State, Chief Akeem Modupe Abogun who spoke at the event, urged the State Government to tackle the issue of illegal miners and curb activities of impostors in the sector. 

He pledged that the forum would cooperate with the government to ensure that the planned sand-mining initiative sees the light of the day. 

On his part the Chairman of Lagos State Mineral Resources Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO), Mr. Sesan Olanrewaju described the stakeholders’ meeting as proof that the State Government is proactive about the subsector, adding that the meeting made it possible for the government to feel the pulse of the miners and provide solutions to challenges confronting their effective operations.
